Victoria Clipper's Flu Shot Sailing Draws Crowds

October 24, 2004

By Mary Nam

SEATTLE - Vancouver Island on a cool fall day attracts hundreds of tourists.

These days, the allure isn't so much a relaxing vacation. Travelers are piling aboard the Victoria Clipper for a shot; a flu vaccine they can't find here in the United States.

Not only are the shots available in Canada, officials assure Americans they won't run out. A total of 2 million doses of vaccine are sitting in Canadian warehouses, waiting for FDA approval before they can be shipped to the United States.

Travelers aboard the Clipper say they have no intention of waiting.

One woman remembers the line she saw back home, "Never have I seen lines in all the years for flu shots with seniors in their walkers standing in line!"

Since Thursday evening the Victoria Clipper has received more than 1,700 reservations for the flu shot cruise.

General Manager Darrell Bryan tells KOMO 4 News people are calling in from all over the country, including Arizona and Iowa. To keep up with the demand, two to three vessels will be making trips daily as opposed to one vessel which is normal for the winter season.

Flu shot cruises cost $105.00 per person and includes a round trip ticket and one flu shot.
